Now that Tax Day has passed and everyone has either paid or submitted their paperwork for an extension and paid at least 90% of their tax bill, what about the group of people that does not have to file on time and yet pays not one penny in penalties?
This group of "taxpayers" has three years grace to decide whether they want to file a tax return or not. They suffer no penalties or audits or criminal penalties for not filing. Where is the outrage? These people break laws with impunity while others spend all their money on lawyers, penalties and fees, besides forgoing refunds for years for the same crime of not filing a tax return.
What is the difference between these people and the poor sods the IRS chooses to harass and prosecute? These people would get a refund if they filed a tax return.
On Tax Day most states are still waiting for approximately 100,000 returns. If 50% of those late or non-filers are due refunds of $1000.00 or more on their federal taxes, it adds up to at least 50 million dollars per state per year, or 2.5 BILLION dollars nationally.
Why should these people who are costing the country BILLIONS be allowed to flaut the laws of this country while others are penalized most severely?
If laws were reformed so that everyone who filed late or not at all paid penalties and fines, the states and the country would gain BILLIONS in tax revenue every year. In these tough economic times that would make a great deal of difference for all of us facing less services and more taxes.
Those who don't file returns whether they are due a refund or not should face exactly the same penalties and fines, on the federal as well as the state and local level.
